mach1 rally report

Rally Report,

In only his second outing in 7 years, Barry McKenna (Den Motorsport) made the decision to join his friends and travel to Scotland for the first running of the Mach1 stage rally. He brought a car for Ross Marshell and one of his own little 2 litre cars.

Stage 1: Was a baptism of fire. Both members of the crew were badly out of practice, and the 7 hour journey might have taken its toll, only way to find out was to "keep it lit" and see what happened. When Barry crossed the flying finish we were both eager to see our finish time, as we had a stall and a couple of near misses. 10.24 was the time and it left the crew 11 overall after the first stage.

Stage 2; This was a rerun of the first and with previous knowledge set a time of 10.17. A full 7 seconds had been clawed back leaving the crew now in 8 overall.

Stage 3: After a good lunch "Irish style" which consists of as much red bull as you can consume in the 2 hour period, we set out to tackle the stages in reverse. As we set in the line for the start the rain started to come, 2 litre rear wheel drive on slicks this was going to be only for the brave. At he start we were right on the pace, catching up on the car in front, but in a hairpin we caught a tyre left by a previous car and spun this time getting beached on a bank. Barry had to use all his skill to get the car unstuck and we set off on what can only be described buy the best fair ground ride you could ever want to sit in. 10.41 still leaving the crew in 8th

Stage 4: This was now fully wet and a lot of standing water. This stage is mine was the comment before we set off, and it was. 11.05 all the ground was made up and overnight we would lie 5 overall in a 2 litre car. Not to bad for an a part time driver.

Stage 5: 08.34am sitting on the start wet tarmac awaits. It is now or never was the decision in the car. 1 mile in and all going to plan, but then disaster! A large puddle took the heat from the front tyres and we hit the large marker bales at full pace. The impact was sicking. To my amazement the car was still going and with 2 laps left I thought no way are we making this. Barry set off again ever more fired up than before, he was now throwing the car about with all the skill of a seasoned campaigner fighting for a championship. 9.09 was the time at he finish, I could not believe we only dropped 10 seconds. It felt like minutes. All the hard work was done for we were back to 12 overall and the day had just started

Stage 6 and 7 ran smoothly and with out any mishaps we were back to 5 again with good steady driving take seconds back in every stage.

Stage 8: It is now or never, dry tarmac and the thought of a 7 hour drive home we decided to make this count. Leaving the best to last 8.31 brought the little 2 litre home in 6 overall. Not bad for someone out of a seat for seven years.

Ninja Karts

Little Dave Stririt

Was out for race meeting at loch gelly on the 1st of june he is getting on much better with his kart and feeling more in control of himself and his kart they are getting such a great turn out that there has to be split heats now and he is just getting himself ready for speed weekend at ipswitch as he has been selected to race at ipswitch and looking forward to it

back to his race meeting and a full grid of 19 karts and these are just kids and switched on kids dave starting from 3rd row at back and in both heats its fight from start flag till the flag changing placess on every lap and trying so hard to hang on the 1st place but taking well deservid 3 place in both heats ,it was same starting place for final but getting more determind to try hang on to the 1st place ,but a happy boy taking 2nd place in full grid and from near the back so the seat time is coming on great with full support from mum and dad and feeling so happy getting on the 2nd spot ,its back home strip kart and re prep for next meeting this weekend

......................................................................................................................................................................................

little dave stripit was at loch gelly sunday for race meeting testing in the morning went great he is getting to grips with his cart and geting more in control the kars are getting much busyer there were over 3 karts out so it was racess with 19 karts out in them and he is now a red top with so much choping about and dicing for placess what a race to get home in 6th place in the 1st race
then its on to the 2nd race and more choping and banging to get home in great 3rd place as he is feeling much better and geting to grips with his kart felt great about his 3rd place and to final and trying to get in the top 3 but had to settele for 4th place but feeling like geting used to his kart and going much very happy with his days racing will keep you posted on the next race meeting.

Round 2

This weekend holds round 2 of the Scottish Legends championship, it’s been busy for The Team and I, I just arrived back from Portugal with Wee Pat, where we were racing legends in the accelerate 14 championship. It’s been tough for the team getting all cars fixed and prepared for round 2 along with equipment after the bad weather from the season opener. This Weekend we have car 2 back out with Stewart Paterson, he had a tough run in round one with a big shunt is race 2 and left him side lined for the rest of the day, he will be back out to give these tricky cars and championship another go. Wee Pat will pilot his 3 machine, he just got back from Portugal after racing in the accelerate 14 legend championship, Wee Pat had a steady run in round 1 and got some good results and points and is sitting 2nd in the championship now. Car 4 will have the reigning champion onboard and hoping for some better luck at this round, Rally Dave had a coming together with Wee Pat in race 1 and then had a big crash in race 2. Kyle Reid will not be back till the next round , Kyle had a good clean run the last day Mark higgins rally driver was hoping to be out in team car butturend he was to busy this weekend , kyle was getting more comfortable with the wet tricky conditions, now feeling better and ready for the next round , but has a hard task with hoping in and out of his mini also. Car 7 run by the students will have Duncan in the seat, no better man than Duncan for racing at Knockhill the chief instructor. Duncan had 2 podiums at the last meeting and will be trying to do some more of that this weekend. Contact me if you’re looking for tickets and hospitality.

......................................................................................................................................................................................

Round 2: I have been a busy boy since round 1, having to get 4 cars ready for round 2, sort out the awning after it left the ground and caused mayhem. Never the less we got everything sorted out and the cars ready. We were sorry to see Paul O’Brian go out on his own, but he is doing a great job and I am sure he and his team will continue to do so. Also out on his own for this year and doing great is David Hunter leading the championship from the off, but myself and my guys along with New Collage Lanarkshire (NCL) are still being kept busy.

We arrived at Knockhill on Thursday night with Alan, Jim, Sean, Willy and welder Bob’s mate. We managed to set up the majority of the awning after the major work done on it over the last few weeks, as darkness fell we unfortunately hadn’t managed to get set up and it was looking like it would be a long night and an even longer Friday. Jim, Willy and Sean finally got things set up late on Friday night and ready to start the prep work on Saturday morning

Back out was #2 Stewart Paterson after his car had a major rebuild from round 1 start line incident, so was spending lots of time shaking his car down was getting into the grove quickly. Car #3, Wee Pat was still looking for that tiny edge and it was proving hard to find, but not for the want of trying. Car #4, Rally Dave didn’t spend any time testing on Saturday but opted to use Sunday familiarisation time instead and then just race. Then it was Car #7, Duncan and once again being run by the guys and girls of NCL, he is getting it well sorted with car and the collage looking after him. He is kept in order by Chris the lecturer who looks after the collage team and the team car. It’s all there doing with help of the guy’s at Burnett motorsport. Duncan had to go give the car a good shake down and make sure it was ok for Sunday. Then Ivor found his way over to the camp in the afternoon Car #37, after a few set up tweaks he was trying to improve on his times, I am sure it will come in time. So on the whole Saturday testing went well with only two problems, we ran out of time sorting the engine out in Wee Pats car, and prop shaft failure smashing up Duncan’s car the NCL team spent a lot of the night sorting out Car #7 and Jim, Willy and Sean Car #3 ready for early start Sunday.

......................................................................................................................................................................................

Race day Sunday round 2

The boys arrive early in morning for sign on at 8 and out for familiarisation at 8.40, that was a non-starter due to fog on track and marshals not being able to see each others post so it was not the best starts to the morning. Wee Pat didn’t get to give his car a good blast until the 1st heat. All the guys went for the ball draw and got their slots for heat 1 and heat 2, it was a 16 car turn out not great but ok. Familiarisation was then called as 3 laps behind the pace car.

It was line up for heat 1 with Stewart Paterson still having to start from back he had a great start anconsistent race coming home 14th. Wee Pat not so happy with his engine but coming home 3rd with good times then it was Duncan with a slipping clutch coming home in a well earned and defended 4th place, with Rally Dave having a hard earned 5th place due to coming together with Euan McKay. At the front David hunter was fighting hard for that 1st place which he got from the hard charging Paul O’Brian, and Ivor coming home 7th and getting to grips with the Knockhill circuit. With the competition at the front it was squaring up to be a hard fought race under very tricky conditions, and what a race it turned out to be with Robbie getting it back together resulting in a great and hard earned 6th place. Also great to see Errico Palazzo back out racing with guys and Duncan getting fastest lap.

Heat 2 was a reversed grid from heat 1 and what a race that turned out to be, so much fighting at the front along with Euan McKay getting to grips with his car and showing consistency at the top and turning in another great drive. Errico also had a good race getting another consistent finish, and Ivor staying in the top 10. David hunter did well holding on to 1st place with a hard charging Paul getting 3rd. Staying at the top with another strong finish was Duncan and Rally Dave, Robbie is also consistently filling the top places and John Bushby also finished well. Another great result for Wee Pat and even managed to slot in a fastest lap.

The final grid was looking like it was going to be hard work with David hunter at the top followed by a hard fighting Paul, then Wee Pat and Duncan next, then Rally Dave and Robbie. Good to see Euan McKay doing a great job of bringing the car home in second, Ivor finding his feet well with another top ten finish. Paul McKay, Garry falconer and Kenny Murray along with John Bushby doing yet another consistent job, with Stewart Paterson starting at the very back and finishing 12th. With the race underway, what a final it was shaping up to be with Duncan going for dry’s and the boys going for wets what a lot of changing places at the front with Pat wanting the final along with David hunter and Paul O’Brian. Rally Dave did not get the best of starts but after he had done half the distance he started pushing much harder and just got that 3rd place by cat’s whisker with Duncan having a hard time trying to find some front end grip. Wee Pat got the result he was looking for and had such a great race with Euan. Euan had got it sorted for a well-deserved 2nd place, and an outstanding last lap from Rally Dave needing that place on the podium. Bit of a sour moment from Paul at the end of the race after the fight for 5th with Duncan, but I’m sure it will be all forgotten by the next round. Well done to Stuart getting his 3rd finish and doing a great job with a well earned 12th place and the propshaft calling it a day after the flag was dropped how lucky that was (should be asking him for the lottery numbers with luck like that). Also well done to Ivor staying at the top with another constant drive and strong finish, But I’m sure you will agree driver of the day had to go to Euan he is coming on great in a short space of time. Great end to another great day.

Once again thanks to all marshals, officials and Knockhill staff who help make our days racing safe and enjoyable.

Just need to get it all sorted for round 3, hope to see you there.

Just need to get it all sorted for round 3, hope to see you there.

..............................................................................................................................................................................Saturday Practice

Round 1:

All the cars were out for a shake down, apart from rally Dave, he was happy with the March test day so opted not to go testing. Everyone had a good run and cars ran fine all day, Stewart Paterson wasn’t happy with his engine so we did a quick change and away he went and he was so pleased at the end of the day! Kyle Reid was finding it tricky as he was jumping between 2 cars, the legend and the mini so he had a tough day!

Race Day:

Weather was horrible in the morning, it looked like we were in for a tricky day and wind was also picking up and the rain came in its showers! All the cars went out for practice to do the 6 laps, Rally Dave suffered an engine issue and required an engine change for race 1, Me and Andy got to work quickly and got it done as race 1 was the first of a tight schedule race day! All other drivers went well in practice, with Wee Pat topping the lap times.

The drivers had the ball draw at sign on this time which has been handed over from Aly Hunter and beenorganised by Alisater Tom, Former legends racer.

Race 1: Was an action packed race for the team, Rally Dave and Wee Pat broke away quickly and had a good hard battle with each other which eventually ended in disaster, as they both took each other out of the race, Duncan was having a good run in the race but then had a misfire and had to retire the car after getting himself upto 3rd place. Kyle Reid was finding it tricky getting used to the conditions managed to bring his newly livered car home for some good solid points in 6th place! Stewart Paterson got caught up in the Wee Pat and rally Dave crash and pick up some minor damage but managed to get his car home and finish his first ever legends race.

It was back to camp for the team to fix the cars and get the ready for race 2, rally Dave needing new ball joints and Wee pat car needing a good wash and his trip across the muck.

Race 2: what a scary start with Ivor Greenwood and John Bushby having a big moment at the start line which made a huge crash, unfortunally Rally Dave got caught up along with Stewart and both cars were in an awful way! Car 2 which was Stewarts was unfixable and he had to retire for the day and Rally Dave was fixed and he managed to get out for the final. Wee Pat had to come from the back of the grid this time and managed to get up the order to 6th as he was almost taking out of it by Daniel McKay at the finish line. Duncan came home in well hard earned 2nd place, Duncan running in the college race and prepared car. Kyle Reid had an excellent run in the team car and got upto 8th, which was so great, he has a hard task of racing in close and competitive classes and 2 totally different cars.

While the team were fixing the cars the wind picked up and sadly for the team awning it took it over the bus and ruined the awning! The team were under pressure to get cars done but no body flinched and kept working away hard to get cars ready for the last race of the day.

The Final:

It was a great race for Wee Pat, he came from the 5th row and managed to win the race comfortably, he battled with Rally for some time who started near the front but Rally Dave over cooked it and lost it coming through the chicane and spun his 4 machine. Duncan had a good steady race from the front and came home in 2nd place again, Duncan felt he was struggling for pace but kept his head down and did a great job. Kyle Reid suffered an issue during the race and his legends day came to an end with a DNF after 4 laps. David Newall battled out the remaining laps with Ex Burnett driver David hunter but Hunter beat him to the line and the reigning Champion had to settle for 4th position. Stewart Patterson didn’t make the final as his car was too sore but he is hoping to make it back out for round 2 on the 4th of May.

What a day for Daniel McKay and great to see Ivor Greenwood back to do battle, Stewart black is looking strong and will be on it shortly. Robbie Burgoyne did a fantastic job despite not feeling so great with his on going back problem, but I am sure he will be back on form shortly too. What a start for John Bushby unfortunately also getting caught up in the second race antics, but all in a great and exciting start to the SMRC 2014 legends car championship and big thank you to all the marshals and officials who give up their time and allow us to have our weekends of fun.

Finally you may have noticed car 7 has had a revamp over the winter by the students from New College Lanarkshire (NCL) which was previously Coatbridge College we have embarked on a partnership with the college to provide a unique learning experience in motorsport enabling the students to run the car for the year, this includes all preparation work before and during events We will also be doing various corporate and charity events during the year promoting both the college and the Legends championship and will have pictures and reports of their progress through the year.

Overall it was a really tricky day for the team as the first meeting always is but we managed to pick up some good solid points and are almost ready for round 2, Contact me if you would like to come along to any of the races.

After a bad start to the 1st race meeting due to the wind catching the awing causing chaos, mayhem and some damage. Not one of our best starts to a season and a massive apology to anyone caught up in the dramas and an even bigger thanks to everyone that came to our assistance during the day. All your efforts made it so much easier for us to take it down and sort it out. There were so many that came to our assistance, and I was so busy with all that was going on I was unable to thank you all individually. Without all your help it would have made my day so much harder and so once again it’s very big sorry and even bigger thanks.

Now, too the race meeting I can’t write too much about this as I didn’t see any but we did manage to collect lots of damage. Rally Dave and Wee pat had a slight coming together in race one when each of them would not give an inch of space the touched. Stuart Paterson didn’t have the best of starts on his first time out, and unfortunately through no fault of his own got caught up in Rally Dave and Wee Pats incident. Duncan Vincent in the (NCL) New College Lanarkshire (previously Coatbridge College) car started well and managed to get himself into 3rd at one point only to suffer from a misfire and eventually retire from race one. Paul O’Brien and Kyle Reid seemed to be the only ones to have a clean run at the weekend, so well done guys.

Race two started well, all be it for about 50 meters then the chaos started, thankfully no one was injured butseveral cars didn’t make it to the restart. Unfortunately Rally Dave was one of those who didn’t make it out for the restart due to the damage sustained in the first start and Stuart’s car was wrecked at the front and rear also resulting in a non start for the rest of the day. Duncan picked up some damage to the front bumper which was swiftly changed before the restart by the students from NCL and repaid by a second place finish. And once again Paul and Kyle escaped the carnage to come through to another strong finish.

After the days events the final was quite undramatic thankfully, With Rally Dave, Wee Pat Duncan, Paul and Kyle coming home safely. So not the best start to the weekend for everyone 20 cars starting and 16 finishing heat 1, 12 in heat 2, and 15 in final. Let’s hope that’s all the cobwebs brushed of and the likes of Paul O’Brien and David Hunter who did well continue the momentum into round 2. Wee Pat’s weekend turned out ok also and the guys (and Girls) at NCL have a wee bit of work to do to get back on the money.

Round 2:

I have been a busy boy since round 1, having to get 4 cars ready for round 2, sort out the awning after it left the ground and caused mayhem.

Heat 1
It was line up for with Stewart Paterson still having to start from back he had a great start an consistent race coming home 14th. Round 1 gone report will be hear shortly with legend cars and Clay Mitchell his 1st time out in his new car with some minor problems and wee pat has been to round 1 of the nat legend csar championship at brands hatch with a bit of mixed things going on but great end to the weekend on sunday with 2nd ovarall

1st April 2014

Round 1

With Round 1 only days away, it’s almost time for the guys to be in for a busy weekend, after a long winter off which seems to have flown by with all the busy rebuilds on the all the cars, it’s time for them to take to the track this weekend for the opener.

Our latest Rookie John Stewart Paterson will pilot car #2 in the stars and strip motor, John had a good run in his first outing on the 16th march and is ready to take part in one of Britain’s toughest and most exciting racing. John will be off the back of the grid this weekend and this will be the same for round 2 as well as he is a Rookie.

Wee Pat Car #3, John Paterson who was one of the big highlights from 2013 season is ready for action, after taking the Rookie title and coming 2nd in the overall championship last year, and he is ready for the action and is one to watch for the 2014 title this year.

Reigning 2013 Champion David Newall with drive the Burnett #4 car again this year, Newall had some mixed luck last season but held it together when it mattered and clinched the title in the final round last season, Rally Dave had a good test day and opted not to hammer his car all day and left early as he was so happy with his car.

Car #5 with be the team car this season, for round it will be driven by Kyle Reid, Kyle better known among the mini drivers will take to the seat again in the legend after he enjoyed his round last season, Kyle is hoping to take to the seat for most of the season, he may have to miss some rounds due to work commitments. Kyle had a good test day on the 16th march, apart from his little off when he hit the gas pedal instead of brakes. Kyle knows his way around Knockhill and will be one to watch.

The Coatbridge College car #7 with have Duncan aboard for the whole season, Duncan is going for the main grid this year and pushing for a legends title, Duncan is no stranger to Knockhill being the senior instructor, Duncan took many victories last season and with some consistent form, will be no doubt up there this season.

Car #9 will have Paul aboard again, Paul finishing 3rd in the championship for the past 2 years will hoping to push that up a notch, Paul hasn’t had any solid testing yet, so he will be running on the Saturday to shake down his car ahead of round 1 to settle car in.

Come join us for the weekends racing, Call me or email me for tickets and some hospitality and enjoy the atmosphere and food in the camp.

Pre-Season Testing for the team
The team have been busy at burnettmotorsport since the final round of 2013 which brought a lot of drama, It’s being a busy few months for the guy, firstly with the loss of Colin and secondly getting all the car rebuilt and ready for action in Knockhill.

The guys had a big project with Belgium based racer Claudes car, which landed in the Burnet HQ at the end of 2013 and had a massive overhaul to get ready for the 2014 Belgium legends series. He could only do the first two sessions as he was away to catch a ferry from hull and needed to get to the boat. Its being busy with all the normal cars which are taking to the stage on the 6th of April for round 1 of the SMRC Legends Championship. We have another new rookie this year who will pedal car 2, another Paterson, John Stewart Paterson, so now we have Big Pat and Wee Pat in car 3 Big Pat only sat his ards on Friday but really enjoyed his time in the seat and looking forward to a season in the Burnettmotorsport machine., Wee Pat suffered from an oil leak which turned out to be a leak from the clutch cover which left him side lined for a few lap until the team could sort it. Car 4 and reigning champion Rally Dave completed 3 sessions and was happy to shake car down and was really happy with his car, so he didn’t do the final group as he was happy with his car. Car 5 will be the team car and was out on test day for Kyle Reid, Kyle enjoying his time in the seat but had a large crash at the hairpin due to pressing the throttle pedal and not the brake, so we had to make a bit of a mode to the pedal so they weren’t so close together. Car 7 will be collage car and the collage have been very busy prepping the car but I pulled the plug on that car for testing as it wasn’t 100% ready. Due to the cost Car 9 Paul did not make it over, but is looking forward to for round 1. Car 6 David Hunter is planning on taking a different route and is now running by himself with Colin after running with Burnettmotorsport since he started legends.
Overall it was a great day for the team, now all the cars are back are back at Camp to get ready for round 1.

6th January 2014

Burnett team boss Steve got a call from John Marshall last week that himself and Ross were out in there 2 cars to take to the grant construction rally at Knockhill on January the 4th.

On Thursday he got a call from Ross to say that his dad pulled his entry due to the bad weather which stopped Den motorsport to get from Ireland with his car.

John decided to let Ross rally in his car, Ross had never
been out in John car with Friday been the first time he had ever driven the car.
They got the car through scrutinee and it was all set for Ross to drive the car 8, with navigator David Hunter who was so nervous as this car was more powerful than his 1600 car. Given some time he was getting well used to it. I was set to go and help, when I turned up it turns out that john got his old historic car pulled out gave it clean and said he¹d do the rally in that when he got there early sat morning he was not feeling so great with his back but thought he¹d give it a go and he was seeded in car 11. John managed to do 3 stages but due to the pain in his back he wasn’t getting on to great with heavy car and the conditions it was time to pull out or make his back worse so to be on the safe side with himself and Scott Crawford felt it be better to park the car up and try get his back to ease off. So it was up to Ross to try get the best out of his dads car and the 1st stage was not so good as he was only getting used to the power of his dads 2.1 million escort but he felt he drove it shit but the results say different and he managed good for his first time out in it along with David and then after that himself and David Hunter did great with 8 stages under some really tricky conditions.

They managed to finish 8th overall out of 47 cars which was a busy rally.

They were 2nd in class only for the fact of couple slight errors and possibly due to fact that he hadn’t driven with that much power in such tricky conditions.

What a great day it turned out to be himself and David finishing with the biggest smile ever in such a hard to drive car.
What a great day for Denmotorsport, Beatsons and Steve from
burnettmotorsport.

Round 1 knockhill
That’s the first weekend done and dusted for the team.
On Saturday we went testing for the whole day, it was a good sunny day with all six drivers taking to the track to shake the cars down and to get back into the groove of things. This was the team’s first outing for 2013 due to the bad weather on the run to the first round. None of the cars had any issues for testing and new boys John Patterson and Steven McGill showed good pace in their cars. As for the more regular guys, Paul, David, Kieran and Rally Dave they all had a successful day, with no major issues. This season we are without 2012 champion Carol Brown and also former Champion Ross Marshall.
