- Lee is Winter Champion
Lee Fitzpatrick
won the Legends Cars Winter Championship at Brands Hatch this
weekend. Exactly one year on from his return to the formula
and his debut with Burnett Motorsport Lee took the winner's
Trophy in Saturday's event after three impressive races. In
the first race Lee was challegning for the lead but spun down
the order only to put in a stunning driver through the field
to take fourth place. He was third in each of the remaining
races and this made him top points scorer to take the Winner's
trophy.
Lee was also racing
against his dad, Gary in this meeting. Gary was racing in
the newcomer's Rookie class and was top points scorer on both
days. There was further success in the camp as Darren Gaulton
won 'Driver of the Day' for his career best 10th places in
the opening races on Saturday, both from the back of the grid.
Steve Reynolds
ended his day in the barriers at the bottom of Graham Hill
but had shown some raw speed throughout the weekend including
a spell leading one of the heats.

- Tunnocks Tour of Mull
John Marshall (co
driven by Paul Hughes) and Ross Marshall (co driven by Vicky
Grant) were back in action this weekend on the Tour of Mull.
Unforuntatly Mull
did not go so well...John Marshall had a new turbo failed
after first two stages, but after a bit of a debate over going
out Friday night we were 3 min out of clock on time ,we then
decided we would enter trophy rally sat morning ,
Ross finished
the first two stages on Friday night but the service revealed
that his Peugeot had a loose steering column. He then went
out for the late night stages on Friday night but after stage
four the alternator belt failed and as there was no phone
signal we could not get it sorted with our emergency crew.
This put Ross and Vicky out of the last two stages. We got
the cars back to base and after further discussions the team
set about sorting cars out for the Trophy Rally early on Saturday
morning.
John M set out
about 2 o’clock on the first afternoon stages. The the first
stage did not go as well as he expected ,but he was just making
sure the car was ok after Friday night. The next stage went
very well for John - he was on a misson and felt great with
the car!
Unfortunately
Ross's rally ended with a roll. He too had been on a mission
but... one of his tyres hit a bit of grass, due to the fact
that there had been lots of rain. It sent him off the road
and the car rolled a few times taking the door off Vicky's
side and the roof down. The car was totalled. The resue helicopter
was called out on stand by but the resue crew got them both
to the hospital.
Understandably
John did not want to continue in the event after that. The
good news is that Vicky is home now. We have got to say that
the emgergency crew ,did a fantastic job - the whole team
thanks them most sincerely for their work.

- Legends race at Knockhill
A great two days
were had by Gary Fitzpatrick and Tony Piggott in the Legends
Cars at Knockhill. Saturday's track time was for testing then
Sunday it was straight down to business in the racing. Tony
had never been in a race car before and had only just completed
and passed his ARDS test. He will be pleased with the improvement
he made from Saturday through the end of Sunday. Gary has
raced Legends once before some years back and slotted back
in very well. Both drivers are looking forward to racing at
Brands Hatch on 4th & 5th November.

- Lindisfarne report from Donna Harper
Donna is George
Grieve's co-driver. Don't forget to check out her profile.
"Lindisfarne:
Luck. I'm a firm believer that you make your own. But I think
with some people they just don't get the chance. George Grieve
is one of those people. After the disappointment of the Tyneside
Stages, George bought a new car - a tidy group N Subaru, and
the first event would be the Lindisfarne, again on the Otterburn
Ranges . The car was a bit of a culture shock after the rawness
of the group A Escort Cossie, it was quiet and refined, so
quiet I wondered for the first few hundred yards if the intercom
was turned on! This makes them very deceptive, and you just
don't realise how fast you are going! Unfortunately it was
over before it started, and we picked up an engine problem.
We were expecting a few teething problems, but nothing so
severe so early on! We stopped in stage for a while and then
limped out the the junction at the top of the service area
and back into service. Another crushing blow, and certainly
something we didn't bring on ourselves this time!
Ah well, 3rd time
lucky hey! It's only a few weeks to the Cheviot!
Thanks to all the
guys for doing what they could and to Trixy for a super cuppa
tea when needed! See you in October boys! "

The team received
John's new car at 6 O'Clock on Saturday morning and went to
work immediately to give it a good spanner check and apply
all the livery as it had to be at scrutineering for 4 in the
afternoon! The team set off to the Rally after completing
all the preparatory work at 1.30pm. After the first set of
stages John had major problem with throttle sticking on when
car was flat out. Needless to say that got him in a few tricky
moments where he went off and collected some damge but he
was still the 4th quickest. The team found it hard to find
out what was causing the problem and that preoccupied them
for most of the first half of the rally which is actually
not that much time for diagnosis when you remember that service
times are only 15 miuntes. As John was heading out to time
control on one of the afternoon sevices the throtle stuck
on again - he came back to service where the team were able
to see what was causing the problem which was a worn throttle
body. While Stevie McCall set about fixing the throttle the
rest of the rally team set about changing the brakes that
were down to nothing due to the car being so quick but not
being able to slow properly due to the throttle problem! Once
back out on stage (the penultimate sections on the day) the
throttle was OK but the turbo blew forcing John and Paul to
retire. Despite the problems John loves the new car and is
looking forward to the next rally - a shakedown event before
Mull.
George Grieve also
had his new car on show although his had arrived on Thursday
afternoon. The team spannered and liveried the car before
George went on the rally which he was treating as a shakedown
event. After completing just one and a half miles the car
developed engine problems that forced him into a very early
retirement.
Finally,
the return of Vicky's Verbals - Vicky Grant's take on her
rally alongside Ross Marshall...
"Well,
Lindisfarne, another rally, hopefully a finish this time.
After out bad luck on the Pendragon rally where we had a mechanical
failure on SS2 we were hoping for a better result this time
round.
SS1-SS3
the stages were fantastic, we were on the pace from the start,
car was going well and so was Ross.
SS4 -
Got to the 4th corner in and the car started to fill with
smoke, stopped and jumped out, opened the bonnet and there
was nothing to be seen, started the car to move it off the
stage and decided it was ok to go on slowly...but not for
long. Belts on but no intercoms as we hadn't a chance to plug
them in. I got mine plugged in and made an attempt to plug
Ross's in - not so easy when he is sitting on the dam lead!
Eventually got plugged in and passed by Ross Hunter at which
point I managed to pick up the notes, so we followed him,
came to a !!L8 and went straight on. Ross in front locked
up, we couldn't see for tyre smoke, he went straight on and
so did we, luckily we weren't too far off and there were spectators
there who gave us a push, unfortunately for Ross Hunter he
was further off then we were and didn't manage to get back
on.
At the
stop line I didn't hold back, Ross got an earful about not
listening and the next time it happened he was getting a punch!
Luckily it was back to service to work out why the car had
filled with smoke, the culprit was a fan belt that had broken.
Back
out to the stages and were trying to make up lost time, all
was going good once again until we got to SS8 (a re-run of
SS4) and the car cut out at the arrival control, thanks to
Mr. Rintoul for the push to get it started. Got to the 3rd
corner this time and the car cut out, we had to manoeuvre
it off the stages and muggins pushed to get it started. Again,
I had no notes while trying to plug in the intercoms, eventually
picked them up came a hairpin right up hill and the car cut
out, our luck had also run out and we had run out of down
hills. The culprit this time was the alternator.
Thank
you to the service crew, who were brilliant through out the
whole day and also the organisers and marshals."

- Lindisfarne this weekend
This weekend sees
the team off to Otterburn for the Lindisfarne Stages. The
line up, as usual, will be John Marshall with Paul Hughes
in the Subaru (starting at number 10) plus Ross and Vicky
in the Peugeot 106.
The Lindisfarne
rally is one of three rallies run on Otterburn Military Ranges
every year. This year competitors will be taken along 110
competitive miles covering 11 special stages. Including the
infamous “Althewayroond” stage covering a mega 21.7miles.
4th September
- News from Cadwell Park
First off, congratulations
to Chris Grieve on winning the 2006 Legends Cars Championship
at Cadwell Park. Lee Fitzpatrick and Steve Reynolds were in
action along with Darren Gaulton. Lee put in a star performance
in the final where he was dicing with Simon Belcher for the
lead for most of the race. Unfortunately things got a little
too frenetic with Lee going off and down the order to ultimately
finish in 10th place. Steve was not happy with his car in
the first race and took twelfth. Thirteenth in the second
race on paper does not look better but he had elected to start
from the back of the grid. With the problems traced to the
throttle Steve again raced off the back in the final and took
a very respectable ninth overtaking Robin Webb and Kevin Clark
in the overall championship in the process.
Darren Gaulton
overtook Brian Webb in the Big John Edwards Rookie Trophy
and therefore finishes second for 2006.

- John and Paul third on Pendragon

Great
news from the Pendrago stages this weekend as John Marshall,
co driven by Paul Hughes, took third overall in their Subaru
Impreza. Overall winners were Malcolm Wilson and Peter Martin
in their Ford Focus. Second were Paul and Martin Benn, also
in a Focus. (pic right is from www.ianhardy.net and is from
the Tyneside stages a few weeks back - great shot we are sure
you will agree).
John's was a great
result for him and the team after having to change a rear
hub, full spanner check and 'look over' all in the 15 min
service after the first six stages. Just before coming back
into service after the following six stages the pair had used
more fuel that anticipated the car ran out out before getting
to service. Luckily the team had taken precautions and our
chase car was at hand to help them home.
As for Ross, a
steering problem after the first stage lost him his finish.
He's trying hard to finish at the top in the Scottish tarmac
rally championship along with Vicky but that put end to their
efforts this weekend - Report from Vicky to follow.

- Jon Paddon writes...
I'm sure Jon won't
mind us publishing a short feature he has written for his
emplyer's magazine...
The
Legends cars are 5/8th scale purpose built racers designed
after late 1930's American stock cars. They have a 10 year
history in Britain and are a real crowd pleaser at the various
racing circuits around the country. As with other club level
events the Legends weekends are family friendly and members
of the public are generally allowed access to the paddock
area where they can meet drivers, see the cars up close and
take photos.
They aren't
the kind of cars I''m used to. I started racing Formula Ford
2000 in Canada back in 1988/89 and grew accustomed to driving
cars with wings and lots of grip. Legends car have no aerodynamic
aids and tend to slide around a lot - especially if it's a
little wet. Since moving to England in 1999 I've been sampling
the various forms of motor racing available here and frequently
attend club meetings. There is an abundance of motor racing
here and so much history too. I'm quite proud to be a part
of it.
My first drive
in a Legends Car was back in October 2003 when I competed
in the full Winter Championship at Donnington Park. I was
very excited to return to Legends Car racing this year and
could not have chosen a more challenging circuit to race than
Oulton Park.
Oulton Park
is a real drivers circuit but does not take any prisoners.
If you make a mistake it's going to be expensive. Fortunately,
I managed to keep it on the black stuff and finishing in the
top 20 of 32 cars in each race with a best finish of 13th
(and all from the back of the grid - webmaster)
With the 2006
season drawing to a close it is unlikely that I will be back
on the circuit this year although I may compete in the Winter
Championship in November at Brands Hatch. Expectations are
high that I will compete in Legends Cars next season as funds
allow.
26th August
- Pendragon Stages
John and Ross Marshall
are competing in Penrith this weekend in the forrth running
of the Pendragon Stages. The event is based at the Penrith
Truckstop with six long stages on the Warcop army ranges,
two pairs of fast stages in Lowther Park and the adjacent
short but demanding spectator special run four times making
up over 65 smooth competitive miles
25th August
- Vicky's Verbals (better late than never!!)
Well done and thanks
to Vicky Grant for updating us with her take on the last few
rallies...
Jim Clark National
rally - before crashing out on leg two of the rally Phillip
Walker and myself were up to 8th over all, the car was had
too much damage to run the following day on the Jim Clark
reivers rally. Phil and his service crew decided to collect
his Mazda 323, we completed the day (all be it not very quick)
in the bone shaker and had a very enjoyable day in the process.
Turnball trophy
rally – we led our class for the whole day and after starting
67th we finished up 19th overall and 1st in class. Fantastic
weather made fast stages at Albermarle Airfield and Ross was
on form from the very beginning. Another brilliant result.
Tyneside stages
– Well…I had heard stories about Otterburn and now I can see
where the stories come from. I was nervous about this rally,
having never been there before and Ross having never driven
to notes before it didn’t fill me with much confidence. The
recce was the night before, I though it would be a good opportunity
for Ross to listen to the notes for a bit and for me to check
them as we went…no chance, Ross wouldn’t shut up the whole
way round (hint hint for next time). I had no reason to worry
though, we took the first two stages in the morning “steady”
and we were on the pace. It was decided he would push a bit
harder for the rest of the day and that he did, fastest in
class for each remaining stage of the day to take 1st in class
and 22nd overall.
I would like to
thank the service crew for assistance at each event and also
the rally organisers.
20th August
- Brands Hatch
The team's biggest
outing of the season got underway at Brands Hatch on Saturday
with five cars represented in the 28 car entry. John Higgins
was the man in form taking fourth in the day's points with
a brace of sixth places and third in the second race. Lee
Fitzpatrick's strongest race was the opener where he took
fourth position after a terrific dice with Dave Newsham, Simon
Belcher and Lawrence Davey. Steve Reynolds' first ever races
at Brands netted 16th and 20th (which he was disappointed
with) and a retirement in the final. Starting from the back
of the grid Chris Robinson broke into the the top twenty with
18th place in the final. The fifth Burnett car saw first time
Legends driver Graham Stephens record three solid finishes
- the Cornishman looked quicker each time he went out.
JJ took fourth
overall on Sunday and showed some useful form. But for an
off at Clearways in the early stages of the final he would
certainly have been on the overall podium. Lee was involved
in the off at Clearways but unlike JJ did not come through
it and his retirement dented his points haul. He had made
top ten in his first heat and then 11th in the final. Steve
Reynolds was only five points behind Lee in the day's points
and had a best on Sunday of 10th in the final as he got to
grips with the Brands circuit. Chris and Graham both had the
task of starting their races from the back of the field but
both improved on their starting positions in all their races.
14th August
- Tyneside Stages
This weekend's
rally went well once again. Ross and Vicky won their class
again. John was 3rd ovarall. Report to follow.

6th August -
Team news from Oulton Park
Quite an impressive
day for the team despite not getting a race win. In the largest
entry of the season there was plenty to write home about.
John 'Jon' Higgins elected to run in the three 'heats' due
to the fact that the meeting was over subscribed. He took
7th in the first race, 16th in the next and wound up with
an impressive 3rd in the last heat - all from the back of
the field! Following Malcolm Clark's accident in the third
race an vacant space bacame available for the final which
JJ proceded to blitz with third place, again from the back
of the 31 car field and setting fastest lap along the way.
Lee Fitzpatrick
was on form too. He set the fastest lap (his first since his
return to the formula this season). This was after a disappointing
first race when he was taken out by another driver but still
managed to bring the car home in 18th. Seventh place (and
fastest lap) followed in the next race and then he hounded
the top guns in the final to finish an impressive fourth from
31 starters.
Steve Reynolds
also started his races from the back of the field (as he missed
the last round) but will be pleased that he was the top points
scorer from that group of nine drivers. Steve took two eleventh
places and a ninth overall but 'within group' took two wins
and two seconds.
Great to see Darren
Gaulton back on the grid after a very disappointing end to
his racing at Mallory the previous week. Darren also introduced
us all to his wife Suzanne and their young baby Toby. Darren
finally got some serious track time in the car taking three
solid finishes including 20th in the final from the 31 starters.
It was good to
welcome back Jon Paddon to the team for the first time since
the 2003 Winter Weekend at Donington. Jon finished all his
races in the top twenty with a best of 13th in his second
heat.

31st July -
News from Mallory Park
John 'Jon' was
back in action at Mallory Park at the weekend and looked very
strong in the heats taking third and fifth. Having sat out
the last couple of rounds JJ had to start all the races at
the back of the grid which made place gains much harder so
the heat results were all the more pleasing. As top points
scorer in the 'back group' JJ started the final at the very
back of the field for the third racce but h's brakes went
off early on. Nonetheless he continued to take 13th place.
Lee Fitzptrick
certainly showed good pace over the day and bagged 10th in
the first race and was running strongly in the second racing
hard with Derek Pierce. The pair spun at the Lake Esses into
the path of oncoming traffic but thankfully all escaped unscathed.
Lee was back in the top ten in the final taking 9th place
and moves up into 8th place in the championship.
Since the last
round Dave Newsham and Darren Gaulton have had work undertaken
by BurnettMotorsport.com. Dave was leading the first race
when gear linkage problems intervened. He went on to win the
third race. Darren was racing in only his second national
championship meeting but had a ball joint fail in the second
race which sadly put a premature end to his day.

Turbull Trophy Rally
Great news from
John and Ross Marshall on the Turnbull Trophy Rally this weekend.
Both drivers won their respective classes in the rally which
had well over 60 starters. John finished 4th overall whilst
Ross was 19th. Well done lads and of course to Paul Hughes
who was co-driving for John and Vicky Grant who was with Ross.
Report from
Paul Hughes... Last Sunday saw rallying return to
Albermarle Airfield after a nine year absence when Tynemouth
Motor Club revived their Turnbull Trophy Rally. It was also
the first time that John Marshall and Paul Hughes had competed
together and they were rewarded with 4th overall and 1st in
class.
The day got off
to a steady start with the crew setting, appropriately enough,
4th fastest time on the first stage, the only problem was
running with a slightly soft tyre compound which in the hot
conditions meant that the tyres started to go off towards
the end of the 13 miles stage. This was resolved at first
service by running the hardest compound available and for
the rest of the event the car ran faultlessly from then on.
Unfortunately,
the next two stages saw the crew slip a couple of places to
6th, this was then rectified on stage 5 when John stopped
the clocks on the 8 mile stage at 8 minutes 9 seconds, 3 seconds
quicker that any one else. This put them back up to fourth
place and the team now had there eye on a podium finish as
they were now trading times with third place man Chris Wise
in his Metro 6R4. With 24 seconds separating them going into
the 13 mile penultimate stage, John pushed hard to try and
catch Wise, however the tyres again started to overheat with
the punishment of a red hot day and a very fast, abrasive
surface, this resulted in a high speed spin going into a tight
left hand corner, right in front of the spectator area! After
another overshoot John had to drive cautiously to the end
of the stage. Wise also had problems on the stage with his
brakes overheating, a problem he had encounted earlier in
the day.
The gap had now
increased to 28 seconds going into the final stage of the
day, surely too much to recoup for the Subaru driver. That
wasn't going to deter John from trying though and a determined
drive saw John rewarded with second quickest overall with
a time of 14minutes 6 seconds, only 4 seconds off the fastest
time but unfortunately only 23 seconds faster than a struggling
Wise, resulting in getting within 5 seconds of third place.
The team were,
however, on their first event together, delighted with 4th
overall and second points finisher in the North of England
Tarmacadam Championship.
The event covered
seventy miles of special stages at Albemarle, a military airfield
near Hexham in Northumberland.

4th July - Jim
Clark Rally - preview by Davie Hatrick
This weekend the
7th, 8th and 9th of July sees Davie Hatrick and John Marshall
team up for this Tarmac Attack on the closed roads of the
Scottish Borders.
The event is based
in the historic town of Kelso where the mayor of the town
will flag away the 300+ crews for this gruelling 3 day event
on the closed roads of surrounding villages namely, Greenlaw,
Duns, Gavinton, the famous Swinton crossroads and the very
popular Langton water splash.
The team are using
the Subaru Impreza N555 BAT which again has had more checks
than usual to try and eliminate the gremlins that are letting
the team down with the recent non finishes.
Putting that aside
the team have already completed the Recce of 80% of the stages
with the remaining Recce being done on Thursday.
Team tactics for
this event is a steady run with an eye on the pace leaders
but with a view to bringing the car home with a reasonable
result, John said after the Recce "The team all know that
there is some serious machinery out there with crews that
have competed this event year in year out and will be hard
to beat.Having said that we have a healthy determination to
be within the front runners and maybe clip the heels of the
big names".
The event format
is as follows;
Thursday.
Complete the Recce;
prepare the car for the Evening Spectator shakedown stage
within the grounds of Floors Castle, which begins at 7pm and
runs till 10pm.
Friday/Saturday
Scrutineering,
noise test and documentation is then followed by the start
of the International Rally at 4pm,closely behind is the national
Rally.6 stages on the Friday night will sort the men out from
the boys for the full days Rallying on Saturday.
The International
and National Rallies both finish on the Saturday night in
preparation for the Rievers Rally on the Sunday.
Sunday.
The Rievers Rally,
a mix of highly competitive Clubman and the Scottish Rally
Championship Crews head out for day 3.
It will be interesting
to see the times against some of the Forest Crews who have
to completely change their cars set-up to Full Tarmac for
this event which is the only closed road rally in the UK mainland.
The organisers
are expecting somewhere in the region of 30,000 spectators
to line the 32 stage Rally over the full weekend.
3rd July - Legends
at Croix
The Legends Cars
had their first ever visit to Croix en Ternois in France over
the weekend with Lee Fitzpatrick and Steve Reynolds racing
in the BurnettMotorsport.com cars...
Lee had his season's
best meeting points score so far on Sunday with 430 (sixth
overall). He has now overtaken last year's rookie Champion,
Nick Evans, in 9th place in the championship.
Steve Reynolds
is only in his sixth National Championship meeting and posted
his second and third best scores so far this year which underlines
his progress in the competition. Steve had an engine change
overnight and was fighting with the leading group in Sunday's
final before being hit and dislodged from what would have
certainly secured his best meeting score of the season.
We were also pleased
to be able to help championship front runner Dave Newsham
who had a broken gearbox after the first heat. Using one of
our engines Dave went onto take second place overall.

Knockhill update...
Steve Reynolds
had his best meeting yet of 2006 as the National Legends Cars
visited Knockhill over the weekend. Steve's Sunday points
tally was his highest of the season so far and incredibly
he managed a fifth place in the one of the heats despite starting
from the back of the field.
The team had a
busy weekend with John 'Jon' Higgins retiring from the proceedings
after engine problems during the first heat. Both Steve Reynolds
and Lee Fitzptrick's cars were taken back to base on Saturday
night for some remedial work.
Lee also netted
his best meeting score of the season with 410 points from
Sunday's race day. His weekend had not started well with two
retirements in the heats and twelfth in the final.Sunday saw
him take two seventh places and a superb fifth in the final.
20th June -
John Marshall update...
John was in action
in the Smartmole Weeton Camp Stages in Blackpool over the
weekend but there was disappointment for the team as he retired
with gearbox problems after three of the twelve stages.
Here's Davie Hatrick's
report... With the previous weekends disappointments at the
Rally of the Midlands the crew headed South for the 8-stage
rally on ahspalt and concrete. The competition was fierce
as there were some of the top seeded competitors from the
North of England championship attending and we knew we would
have to be on the pace from stage 1.
Both the car and
the crew set a blistering pace on the first two stages and
were sitting in a very dominant position at the end of these
two stages. The tarmac was very loose in parts and John struggled
to control the full power of the Subaru Impreza N555 BAT but
still managed to steer the car round with only a half spin
on the approach to a very slippy 90 left.
The weather had
started off dry and the forecast was for it to remain so but
as we were on the start line of stage 3 the heavens opened, too
late to change the tyres we had to go with the dry tyres we
had on.As there was no real standing water the tyres proved
not to be too much of a problem and returned to service .On
checking the stage times we found ourselves 2nd overall behind
Tim Finch in the Escort Coisworth who is reputed to be a master
in the wet at this event.
Stage 4 saw a
change in tyre to cope with the heavy rain and with that we
dropped two places to 4th overall after the fourth stage.
With the car now
in service for the lunch break we had time to relax and have
a spot of lunch while the service crew attended to the checks
before heading back out for the afternoon stages and try to
claw back the lost time due to the rain.
On leaving the
service area one of the service crew spotted a puddle under
the car and called us back in, only to find the car had dumped
all of its gearbox oil on starting. The crew hastily jacked
the car up, removed the sump guard and instructed us to remain
in the car as we only had 7 mins to rectify the fault and
rejoin the time control before lateness penalties would apply.
After 10 mins
the fault was not rectified and there were no signs that the
fault could be rectified within the 15 mins of total lateness
allowed so the team made the decision to retire.
The fault was
found to be the gearbox actuator pipe that maintains the pressure
to the gearbox oil, a bracket had snapped and with it being
loose, on start up dumped the oil.
The car has now
undergone major checks to try and avoid the minor failures
that are hindering us from some very promising results.
The next Rally
for the team is the Gruelling 3 day event held in the Borders
town of Duns, namely the JIM Clark Memorial Rally.
This is one of
the most demanding closed road rallies on the calendar and
with us mixing with the Best of the Irish Tarmac Championship
as well as the British Rally Championship ,yet again we will
be on the pace from day 1.
11th June -
Rally of the Midlands...
Thanks
to Davie Hatrick of GMC-MOTORSPORT who was co-dring for John
Marshall at the weekend for this report...
The Subaru Impreza
N555 BAT had recently undergone some major engine and transmission
work and John and I were in an upbeat mood regarding the upcoming
event. The event format was a three day rally over some of
the most testing surfaces and stages the area had to offer.
Friday Evening
leg 1
With
the town centre closed off for the start ramp procedures we
were waved off the start line by the Mayor of Hinckley and
headed to the first two stages at Mallory Park racetrack on
the Friday evening. The two stages went well with the crew
and the car performing in top form and matching the stage
time given by Tom Morris in the MG Metro 6R4. There was a
super special stage organised round part of the closed off
town centre and through the grounds of the council offices
but due to there being too many crews taking an incorrect
route on the short 0.7mile stage the organisers decided to
cancel the times on this stage, and we completed the short
stage for the benefit of the thousands of spectators who turned
up to see the action on their doorstep in the evening sunshine.
The car was then driven to Parc-Ferme overnight in the position
of joint leaders for the 9am start on the Saturday Morning.
Saturday Leg
2
Today's format
was once again a ceremonial start in the Town Centre followed
by 9 stages shared between Mallory park and the MIRA test
facility. The first stage of the day at the MIRA test facility
was 16.5 miles of roads that can only be described as some
of the most demanding the cars would ever compete in,with
crests,adverse cambers,fast straights,tight chicanes and a
banked oval circuit it proved to be suited just right for
the Subaru. With no dramas and incident free rallying we were
continually having to push to try and gain more time on the
6R4 of Morris who had previously won the event 3 times.the
next two stages were a return visit to Mallory Park racetrack
and on the first loop of three at the circuit we had a half
spin at approx. 80mph wiping out a chicane and causing some
minor panel damage to the offside rear quarter panel. At the
end of the stage we surveyed the damage and minor as it was
it was causing the rear wheel to rub on the bodywork so a
bit of pulling of the wheel arch rectified the wheel rubbing.
The next few stages ran well but a return to MIRA saw us run
wide on a very fast right hand bend and losing traction we
slid wide and ran along the Armco barrier causing more panel
damage but as we kept the power down it minimised the extend
and later we only found a small scratch to the rear door and
rear quarter panel.(both sides now having matching damage!!)
Back to service
at the Bosworth Country Park and a well earned lunch break
saw the service crew hard at work changing the diff setting
and tweaking the suspension, changed the two rear discs as
they had warped and the comprehensive checks all complete
the crew could relax before going out for another trip to
the MIRA test Facility followed by another two stages at Mallory
Park then parc-Ferme for the evening.
Around 9 miles
into the next stage after lunch at MIRA on a long straight
pulling around 125MPH the car lost all power, with no electric's
we found a safe place and ground to a halt to try and find
the problem. Both John and I searched frantically for loose
connections, broken wires, burnt wires or indeed the battery
connections we could not rectify the fault.
With that we had
lost far too much time and admitted we were out of the rally. We
were both utterly disappointed in the electrical failure and
it was a sombre very long drive home that night.
With only a week
to go till the next Rally with John at Wheeton camp in Blackpool
the electrical fault will have to be found and the bodywork
repaired to get the pristine car ready for this single venue
event.
8th June - John
Marshall in action this weekend...
John
Marshall and David Hatrick are back in action this weekend
as they steer Subaru N555BAT around the gruelling three day
Rally of the Midlands.
This year the event
has increased the stage mileage - very close to 100 stage
miles.Things get underway on Friday evening, with two stages
at Mallory Park and one around the Council House in the centre
of Hinckley. It's anticipated that the last cars through on
Friday will be greeted by fireworks!
On Saturday the
rally will again start from Hinckley Town Centre with the
stages at the test track as well as a couple of visits to
Mallory, slotting in between practice for their 50th Anniversary
meeting on Sunday. The service area will be at Bosworth. Sunday's
start, service and finish will be in Nuneaton Town Centre.
5th June - Update
from Croft...
The
Legends National Championship saw action at Croft in North
Yorkshire over the weekend and the team were delighted to
welcome back Matthew Pape for the weekend along with Steve
Reynolds who we are pleased to say will be contesting the
remainder of the National Championship with us.
John 'Jon' Higgins
was back out in his regular car after the team worked miracles
and all hours to get the number 3 machine back to its former
pristine condition. JJ was looking good for a podium on Saturday
with two fourth places in the heats but a gearbox failure
put paid to any hopes of points in the final and ensured another
late night (early morning) for the team as they repaired the
car. Sunday showed that the work had not gone to waste as
JJ took second place behind Lawrence Davey in the first heat.
JJ had made up a lot of ground from his grid position and
nearly caught Lawrence at the end. In the second race he was
fourth and a seventh place in the final meant that he was
fourth overall on the day. JJ moves up one place in the championship
table.
Lee Fitzpatrick
was frustrated by officialdom and a slower driver. Again faced
with the choice of hitting a slower car or breaking rank at
the start of a race Lee chose the latter option but was awarded
a drive through penalty for his trouble in one of Sunday's
heats. He retired in the second heat but was 11th in the final.
On Saturday things had started well with fifth place in the
opening race - his best National Championship finish so far
this season. He backed that up with a solid eighth in heat
two and ninth in the final which meant he was seventh overall
from the 27 starters.
After
a bouyant meeting in the SMRC races at Anglesey Steve Reynolds
did not have the best of weekends and elected to start Sunday's
races from the back of the grid. His best result over the
two days was a very respectable 13th place finish in Saturday's
27 car final.
Matthew Pape continued
where he left off at Donington as the top scorer in the rookies
on Saturday but as he had missed Anglesey he has unfortunately
lost the lead in the rookie trophy. In Sunday's races Matthew
was only the equivalent of one race place behind top rookie
scorer Dave Ward in the points.
22nd May - Higgins'
car demolished but he wins on Sunday...
John
'Jon' Higgins was lucky to escape a high speed multiple roll
over in the final of round two of the National Legends Cars
championship at Anglesey at the weekend. JJ had won his opening
heat and with fourth place in the second he was looking good
for an overall meeting win or podium. The roll over occurred
in the opening lap of the final when JJ was dicing with the
other top scorers from the heats. With the car a complete
write-off the team prepared the hire car for action in Sunday's
event. JJ was immediately on the pace taking the fastest time
in practice and winning the first race. Unfortunately heavy
rain had been falling all morning and got worse just before
JJ's second heat and the event was abandoned.
Lee Fitzpatrick
had a frustrating day on Saturday with problems in practice
meaning that he only managed a handful of laps. In the racing
he was penalised for a jumped start caused when the car in
front of him on the grid had a woeful start causing Lee to
break ranks and move to the outside. Lee's options were either
break ranks or hit the car in front. Contact was avoided but
Lee's move meant that a drive through penalty was awarded
which destroyed any hopes in the race. He took tenth in the
second heat and 13th (from 24 starters) in the final.
Steve Reynolds
was clearly enjoying himself in the Scottish competition as
he took second place in Saturday's final. This race was one
of the highlights of the season so far with Steve successfully
defending second place from championship leader Gerard McCosh
and third placed David Thorbun. The trio circulated in close
company for lap after lap but Steve proved equal to the pair
and held on to take second place.

Overend Memorial Stages...
86 crews started
the John Overend Memorial Stages on Sunday, the event being
held at Melbourne Airfield, York. John was in action once
again with Ross co-driving for the day. After a hard fought
eight stages, John and Ross chased eventual winners Alex Taylor
and Colin Thompson to 2nd overall. THe end result was close
to say the least, just 1minute 23 seconds between first and
second.

8th May - Pape
is top rookie...
Matthew Pape came
away from his first National Legends race meeting as the winner
of the annual first round Rookie Trophy winner. Matthew was
12th 10th and 15th overall out of 29 starters in his three
races.
John 'Jon' Higgins
was pleased with his performance as he finished the day fourth
overall after recording fifth in the first race and then second
in heat two and fourth in the final.
Lee Fitzpatrick
took 7th in his first heat and the final plus a 12th place
in the second heat. Lee is now ninth in the championship meaning
that the team come away from Donington Park with two drivers
in the top ten plus the lead in the Rookie Championship.

1st May - Lap
record and win for Higgins...
John 'Jon' Higgins
had his first outing of the season racing with the Scottish
Championship regulars at Knochill yesterday (Sunday, 30th
April). As a guest driver JJ was not racing for points and
started his two races off the back of the grid. He took second
place in the first race and lowered the circuit lap record
in the process. JJ went on to win the second race, again from
the back of the grid.
Lee Fitzpatrick
was using the meeting as a test session taking 10th in the
first race then 5th in both the second heat and the final.
Burnett Motorsport also welcomed back Steve Reynolds to racing.
Steve was 8th in both of the heats and retired in the final.

1st May - GRAHAM
LEWIS
All at Burnett
Motorsport were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the
death of John Marshall's co-driver Graham Lewis who was co-driving
for Stuart Newby after a call up for the Granite City Rally.
We extend our very
deepest sympathy to Graham's family and friends. We would
also like to extend our sympathies to Stuart, his Driver,
and to the Crew of the car involved in the accident.
24th April -
Parkhead Building Supplies Tarmac Stages...
More details to
follow but Ross Marshall 'drove the pants off his car' on
every stage last weekend at Ingliston. With the help of co-driver
Vicky Grant and the rest of the team he bought the car hom
to a class win by two minutes - an excellent result. John
Marshall and co-driver Dave Hatrick also drove faultlessly
on all eight stages. The pair were second overall until the
turbo blew on stage eight so he was denied a flying finish!
.
Vicky's view:
Well, not too much of an early start this time round
which was lovely, weather was fair and it was a little windy
but never the less spirits were high in the camp for a good
days rallying ahead.
It was my second
time at Ingliston but a first for Ross and to be honest
we had no set game plan for the day but the result we were
looking for was 1st in class and try to get in the top 20.
How we went about it was more or less left up to ourselves.
On SS1 we set
the fastest time in the class by 12 seconds even after we
went via a few stakes, onto the grass and bounced right
off again. All continued very well till we caught the car
in front near the end of the stage and were unable to get
past, we ended up side by side down the home stretch towards
the "yump" (or jump as some of us like to call it), Ross
had been informed to keep left over the jump and thankfully
the other car kept right or it could have got a whole lot
messier. And after a wee row from the Clerk of the Course
for our escapades we were off to stage 2. After our wee
stake murdering incident on the previous stage Ross had
been warned by yours truly to "chill oot" a bit to avoid
the stage furniture and that we did, 1 sec slower than our
first time round but still fastest in class by 3 secs.
SS3 was a bit
less eventful, possibly the only scary moment would have
been when we were joined by the mini minda at one of the
merges and it was a bit of a scary sight when you turned
around and saw that up yer behind! Again fastest in class
by 13secs.
On SS4 we took
4 seconds out of our previous stage time, even after we
had to nearly stop at a very tight merge when Mr. Pringles
spotty astra seemed to be going quicker so we decided not
fight it out and let him go, plus he was bigger than us
so I think it would have been us that came off worse!
SS5 was the
reverse of the stages we had done in the morning and all
was going very well till on our second lap round, a nova
(which was going considerably slower than us) joined us
at the merge, than proceeded to pull out and slow us down,
we got passed but then couldn't slow down for the fast approaching
90 left, ended up sliding across the grass and avoided a
penalty after yelling at Ross not to put power down on the
grass. Phew! Again quickest in class by 16 secs.
Nothing exciting
to report on SS6, fastest in class again by 7 secs. And
after stage 7 we arrived at service to find we were missing
the rear bumper, ooops, says Ross, it must have fallen off!!!
It was returned courtesy of 2 of the efficient marshals,
my sister Susan and a friend, still in one piece, with a
few suspicious pieces of hay bale still attached!!!
Both stages
7 and 8 were meant to have been taken a bit easier as we
had plenty time in hand for the class win, on the start
line Ross decided to tell me that wasn't going to be the
case as at that point we were sitting in 20th place O/A,
not good enough for our Ross, none the less he kept it on
the black stuff which meant not only did we win all stages
against our class, achieve 1st in class, we also finished
18th overall.
And sadly for
John Marshall he blew his turbo on the last stage where
he had been lying 2nd overall, a bit of shock and confusion
for us when we saw John's car abandoned at the side of the
road on the last stage. Maybe a wee bit of help for us as
it gained us a higher O/A place, but we would have much
preferred to have been placed 19th with John in his rightful
2nd place. Commiserations to John but he'll be back.
And thank you
to all the service crew, efficient as ever, who rallied
around after us all day, also to the organisers, marshals
etc that helped make the event run so smoothly.
Thanks to John's
co-driver who supplied these words...
Since our last
event at Crail we have removed the engine as planned only
to find additional works required to bring the Corsa back
to the reliable car that it was. This meant that we had
to withdraw our entry for this event at Ingliston as the
engine was a few weeks away from being ready. The week prior
to the event I received a telephone call from John Marshall
to ask if I was available to navigate for him in his ex
Pierra Liatti Subaru Impreza N555 BAT, yes please!
Running at car
number 5 and with John having won the last event outright
at Charterhall it was an experience not to be missed. Having
never sat in a car with this sort of power and acceleration
I knew that with the complexities of the 4 splits and 2
merges on each of the 8 Tarmac stages I would have to be
on the ball with the notes. 9am approached and the service
crew had the car ready to go, we had our start time of 9.02,
the traffic light start line beckoned into view and John
started flicking all sorts of switches, buttons and gismos.15
seconds, 10 seconds 54321 go !!!!!! As John launched off
the startline in a frenzy of popping, banging the notes
began to flow giving John all the precise details he required.
The difference being I had to read the notes somewhat quicker
and more in advance for John rather than the usual pace
of the Corsa. The only way I can describe the feeling off
the startline is being like on the ride of Oblivion at Alton
Towers last year!!!
We were held
up for around 7 seconds on the first stage as car number
9, Mk2 Escort failed to move over and let us past until
a long straight allowed us to power past. A quick half-hour
service allowed all the diffs, wheels and regular checks
to be made on the car for stage 2. This time we increased
the pace to try and beat the MK2 to the first merge to be
in front of him before the tight and twisty sections and
that is what we did, by a split second. We cut a corner
a little too much and clipped a lorry tyre sending the car
up at a 45-degree angle but John just kept the power down
and drove out of what could have been a very nasty roll.
By midway on the event we still held onto our 2nd overall
position with the MG Metro 6R4 of Tommy Morris already 10
seconds ahead. The Mitubushi Evo of John and Jim Rintoul
had retired on the stage with diff failure and as John passed
them he said to me he was dissapointed they had retired
as it would have been a good battle with them today.( or
words to that effect!!)
The car behind,
a 380BHP Darrian Kit car was beginning to nip at our heels
so we kept the pace up and going into the last stage were
exactly 2 seconds ahead of the Darrian. With us still holding
onto our fastest first stage over the Darrian it means that
we could afford to be beaten by 2 seconds on the final stage
by him but as we had the fastest first stage we would secure
2nd Overall. To add to that we also had fastest stage time
on the second last stage taking 2 seconds out of the MG
Metro 6R4 of Morris. On the last lap of the 3 lap final
stage John felt the car losing power on the tight twisty
section as we were attempting to overtake an Escort Cosworth,
bang!! We had blown a turbo END OF RALLY. After such a flawless
run all day this sport can be so cruel at the worst possible
times and I am gutted for John as he was on for full points
in the championship.
I would personally
like to thank John at Beatson`s Building Supplies and all
of his service crew for letting me enjoy one of the best
days I have ever had in a Rally car. I will be back in a
week's time with an update on the current situation of our
own Corsa and the progress of the engine rebuild. Davie

2nd April -
Charterhall Stages Success...
John
Marshall had a very good day on Saturday but it was a hard
fought battle to the very last stage. This time JM was reunited
with Graham Lewis again and you would think by now they would
have worked out 'straight on' or 'left' as JM came in after
and early stage not an entirely happy camper. The pair sorted
things out however, having a talk while the team played with
the car. Trying to find the right tyre for the muddy and wet
conditions was an issue as well but they got that sorted too.
Sitting in third overall by the second last stage it was a
team thing of 'win it or bin it'. Of course with JM calling
the shots there was only one option and in true form they
both went out to win! Result? First overall by 3 seconds.
In addition to
the overall win the team also had a class win for Ross and
Vicky so it was happy camp at the end of the day. Great effort
all round. John's off on his holidays now with his family
before its back to the Scottish Tarmac Championship at Ingliston
on 22d April.
Vicky's
verbals... A sunny day was a greatly welcomed after
the start at Crail last weekend, the 5.30 start in the morning
wasn't quite so, nonetheless spirits were high in the camp
for the day ahead.
With little
dramas throughout the whole day there really isn't much
to report - well apart from one wee spin and a close encounter
with a Ford Sierra on Stage 4!
It was Ross'
first time driving on a loose surface in competition and
i must say he took to it like a duck to water and made very
good friends with Mr. Handbrake.
We set fastest
times on every one of seven stages in our class which led
us to a class one victory by over a minute and a half -
a country mile considering the top 4 drivers of the day
only had 14 seconds seperating them.
A good day had
by all and well done to John Marshall who won the event
- many trophies in the Beatson's camp!
28th March -
Gallery Update...
Check out the 2006
Gallery for our update showing pictures from the weekend's
action - the rally at Crail and the Legends rounds at Knockhill.
Matthew Pape was not racing for points at Knockhill but improved
his pace with each race.
27th March -
Rally news...
John Marshall,
co driven by Steven Clark took 10th overall from 62 competitors
and 6th in class 5 in his Subaru in the rescheduled Grant
Construction Tarmac Stages at Crail over the weekend. The
overall winner of the rally (and the winners of John's class
were John and Jim Rintoul in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6. Ross
Marshall was having his debut in his class 1 Peugeot 106 and
took 5th in class. Ross's Co-driver Vicky
Grant has done some notes for us as follows...
"Early
morning start, to say the weather was a tad misrable is
the understatemeant of the century!! Thick pea soup and
rain were going to make driving conditions for the day interesting
to say the least. However, a warm welcome and a bacon roll
at the Beatson camp by the resident chef was much appreciated.
With new car
and new co-driver it was agreed first stage would be taken
causiuosly - was it hell. An early introduction to some
rather large haybales and how slippy it was out there was
a lesson learned rather quickly, however a fast stage time
was still set even with a few minor detours.
Ross very quicky
settled into the new car and to new co-driver, to set a
second fasted class stage time after a very close encounter
with a bale, so close i ended up wearing the passenger window....thanks
ross! However, a replacement window was "borrowed" (cough
cough) from John's co-driver's car - mental note to self,
never leave your car open around the Beatsons Camp!!!
Stage 3 would
see us set the fastest time in the class by 11 seconds and
for us to be lying 25th overall and second in class, with
no major dramas, well we were witnessed having a "moment"
on two wheels.
Altough our
day took a turn for the worse, a lapse of concentration
in the co-driver seat due to some poor splattered pheasants
caused us to miss a spli, leave the stage early and recive
a stage maximun of 15 minutes - just not what we wanted.
Continued onto
Stage 5 where we set another fastest class time, due to
Ross gaining confidence in himself and the capabilites of
the new car. By God that thing can shift!
SS6 - Despite
a wee spin on the first corner we went on to set a 2nd fastest
class time to finish the rally 28th over all. All would
not have been possile without the continued support from
the service crew throughout the day and the vast preperation
of the car prior to the event.
Roll on Charterhall!"
24th March -
Weekend preview...

JM Almost ready for Crail take 2 |

Ross's Peugeot |
Beatons Group drivers
John and Ross Marshall are in action this weekend for the
second rally of the season. The event is the one originally
planned for a few weeks back at Crail. Ross will finally get
to compete with his new Peugeot 106 with his new navigator
Vicky Grant, daughter of Bob Grant, a fellow competitor in
the tarmac championship. Bob drives a Group N Subaru.
John Marshall will
be back out in his "old car" ,with a new engine
and different gearbox (following the problems at the last
rally).
Also we will be
out at Knockhill this weekend - it’s the first and second
rounds of the Scottish Legends Cars Championship. Mathew Pape,
who did will with us last season, will be racing and is treating
the weekend as a test session prior to his debut in the National
Championship at Donington Park in May.
18th March -
Belcher's car re-jigged...
Preparations
continue for the 2006 Legends Cars season. Although the recently
planned test day at Knockhill was snowed off it doesn't stop
activity in the workshop. Simon Belcher's ex John 'Jon' Higgins
car has been in at Burnetts for re-jigging. A small gallery
is in our set up page.
4th March -
Rally off...
Unfortunately this
weekend's rally was called off due to bad weather.
3rd March -
Rally round up...
Two new rally cars
for this weekend.. One ex works Peugeot 106 for Ross Marshall
as he continuing rally driving along with his dad, John. Ross
will be in action this weekend at Crail
Raceway, and he has a new navigator for the rest of the
tarmac championship.
John's Group A
car is still waiting on a new engine. He has just taken delivery
of a new Subaru and he will contest the Grant Construction
Tarmac Stages at Crail this weekend with the new car which
is a stop gap until his new engine arrives.
6th February
- Retirement for John and Ross...
The team had their
second rally of 2006, the Palmerston Trade Furniture Stages
which took place at Crail on Saturday.
Ross had his first
rally and settled in really quickly being relaxed right from
the off. He was up to 4th in class by the afternoon but unfortunately
had to retire due to clutch problems.
John Marshall had
a bad start to the first stage when he went the wrong way
at a split. After this he had a penalty but that was soon
put behind him as he drove superbly on the next few stages
to start making up some of the lost time. Things continued
well but on the last stage, merely 200 yards before the time
control, the engine tightened up on him causing his retirement
as well whilst in third place.
A selection of
picures... More can be found in the Gallery.

26th January
- Big John Edwards memorial trophy...
The
'Big John Edwards' Trophy was presented for the first time
at last weekend's Legends presentations. We thought you might
like to see Stevie's introduction which is a fitting tribute
to the big fellah.
"Before
I present the Big John Edwards Rookie Legends Championship
trophy I would like to take a few minutes of your time. Firstly
I would like to thank Phil Cooper. I would just like to say
for those of you who did know and also those of you who never
had the pleasure of knowing Big John, he was the face in the
pits, he was always helpful and in every way friendly and
there for anyone who needed help with their Legend Cars not
only within but also out with the Burnett Motorsport race
team . John was taken from us just over a year ago just before
Christmas 2004 in a tragic car accident. It was a great loss
to everyone & ourselves and also the sport.
After discussions
with my team at Burnett MotorSport we decided we wanted to
commemorate John's life and carry his name on in the sport.
We then had discussions with Phil who knew John with his involvement
in Legends Cars over the past 4 years he agreed to our suggestion
of naming the Rookie Championship "The Big John Edwards Rookie
Legends Car Championship" in his honour.
I really have
to thank Phil for allowing it to happen; also I want to thank
everyone here who gave us their support to make this possible
and some who are not here, notably Caledonian Homes, Beatsons
MotorSport and Scottish Legends. Big John is a sad loss to
us and we are pleased to carry his name on through the rookie
legend cars. John participated in the Scottish Legend Car
Winter Championship at Knockhill in 2004 and he had hoped
to become a rookie in 2005 and compete in some of the championship
rounds. However due to his tragic death this was not possible.

- 2006 Gallery open...
Time to open up
another gallery! 2006 is upon us and the first action of the
year for Burnett Motorsport.com saw John Marshall in action
at Croft on 15th January.
It was the Jack
Frost Rally and, at the first stage, the car was jumping out
of 2nd and 3rd gear. By the 4th stage we had lost 4th gear
but John was still holding on to his place at front. He was
6th fastest in the morning then we had to retire due to losing
4th gear. The track was so slippy it was an extremely hard
rally - cold and wet but then I guess Rally Drivers are made
of strong stuff! The car is now home and gear box is away
for rebuild. john will out at Crail on 4th Feb hoping for
a better day.
