25th July 2010
- Legends Scottish Championship in association with Specsavers
Round Six, Knockhill
After a busy time
when we all got back from Lydden Hill with the National Championship
we had five cars ready for Knockhill and round six of the
Specsavers Scottish Championsihp.
Big Tom and James
set off with John Marshall in his front running Escort - it
was to be a bsuy day as Robert Marshall was making his first
outing of the year with his 2.3 litre Vauxhall Chevette
Robert's testing
did not go so well - the car had an oil leak and it was thought
to be a camshaft oil seal - it kept the guys working into
the wee hours. Big Tom was running about all night but got
the seal. I have to thank my mate Kevin for coming back to
his workshop and making a seal carrier and sorting out a seal
just in case but it turned out the problem was a little more
serious than a seal. Robert had to abandon qualifying as the
car was just not right so his weekend came to a premature
end. He will however get it sorted out for the next meeting
and after chatting to him he said he has got to find something
to do and he wants it to be motor racing - I am sure he will
get it sorted and get back into it.
John was a busy
guy as ever racing his Legends Car with is and testing his
Escort as well. John was out in the Escort when they did the
draw for the Legends grid positions so I did the honours for
him and drew pole position. Well, all part of the service!
All in all a busy day for the team starting with a misfire
for David Hunter's car that turned out to be OK after some
changes but these things are hard to diagnose when you need
track time to sort rather than running the car around the
paddock.
Qualifying saw
Scott Hynds top of the sheet - he flew back from France to
race on Sunday and he seems to have got it all together. Ross
Mickel was second from Ross Marshall (in our Champions Team
Car), Tony Caig, Elliott Mason, JM, Alasdair Gauld and then
Kieren Murray who is getting it together very impressively
and rapidly as a newcomer. David still had his misfire during
qualifying.
It was heat 1 with
JM at the front and turs out to be such a nail biting first
race with John getting out in front - he had to fight so hard
to keep that first place but what a drive he produced, as
the 2nd 3rd and 4th places which changed almost every lap
with Scott Hynds pushing hard, also Ross Mickel and Glenn
Burtenshaw there were four cars on the back bumper looking
for that first place but John drove faultlessly and won the
first race. Ross was doing great after his disappointment
from the National Championship round at Lydden as he does
not think it's for him any more. He came from the back of
the grid into fourth place and was chasing for 3rd when he
and Glenn Burtenshaw had a coming together so he had a retirement.
Kieren had an excellent 6th place with David just ahead of
him in 5th. Both these guys are really getting to grips with
Legends Racing. Alasdair had a great drive with 3rd place
despite a slipping clutch and brakes not quite right either.
Scott Hynds was fourth but that was taken away from him after
post race scrutineering.
So the team were
busy doing the clutch and brakes on Alasdair's car and then
sorting out Ross's damage. The other cars were re-checked
and ready for race two. Ross got a misfire on the warm up
lap and then the race was underway - another cracker with
Ross Mickel winning and a great drive from Colin Atkinson
to tack second place. What a great drive too from Alex Knight
in his first race this season to take third. Kieren was fourth
- his best to date but David had that misfire again so had
a non finish.
The final was interesting
and Ross had a start at the front after low points scores
in the first two races - he set off as you would expect him
too and controlled things as he wished although Scott Hynds
pushed hard too. Kieren finished his day with third overall
in the points - a great result for a rookie driver and he
now leads the Rookie Championship. Alasdair took a hit with
Colin Atkinson which broke his steering. David still had the
misfire and JM had no brakes or clutch after a coming together
with Alex Knight in the second race.
In summary a good
weekend's racing from all in the SMRC paddock - the pace is
quick and evenly matched which is just how it should be in
Legends. Our next outing is the double header with the National
Legends on Anglesey.
