18th April -
Legends Scottish Championship in association with Specsavers
Round One, Knockhill
A very busy weekend
for the team at Knockhill - the big top set for five cars
and two days of racing with the GT programme. Big Tom had
completed John Marshall's Escort so he was in for a busy weekend
of race driving!
The line up was
headed by our new SMRC team car with Ross Marshall at the
wheel - there will be different people in the car at different
rounds but they will all be champions! Kieren Murray was out
for only his second time racing in car 5. David Hunter was
out in car six as usual with Alasdair Gauld in car 21 and
John Marshall in 58 - his first race of 2010 and his first
Legends race since Spa in Belgium last season.
Qualifying was
early on Saturday morning with championship leader Ben Mason
first with our Ross in second position in the new Champions'
Team Car. This is the machine that Steve McCall raced on the
tri-oval last year. Steve had a meeting with the team after
the National Championship meeting at Brands Hatch and decided
to slot this car into the SMRC Championship and to try and
make it a winning car - just like the other Burnett Motorsport
machines. Second place in qualifying on the first time out
was a just reward for the team and Ross.
Nick Brace is
running himself this year of course but it was good to see
him back at Knockhill where he won the Rookie Championship
last season. Alasdair was 7th with David 10th and John 11th.
Kieren was 19th which was a great result too - remember this
was only his second time in a race car.
The first race
saw a great result for the team as Ross took a hard fought
win from Ben Mason with Ross Mickel and Nick Brace all chasing
hard. David Hunter was an excellent 5th with Colin Atkinson
not too far back either. Colin had won at the first round
and has really found both pace and consistency this season.
Alasdair was 9th just ahead of young Dean Brace with Kieren
in 16th coming all the way from the back of the grid which
you will remember is where all newcomers have to start. Ben
Mason took the fastest lap.
Race two went
to Ben Mason, his third win of the season with Nick Brace
in fourth after dicing with Frank Hynds, Tony Caig and the
rapid Chris Hynds out in the family team car.
After getting
fastest lap in the second race Ross had another great race
in the final coming through from the back to win - what a
great result for our new team car. Nick was second with a
hard drive from Frank Hynds placing him third ahead of the
guy everyone loves and respects, Gerard McCosh - great result
for him. Alasdair took 7th place with John Marshall in 8th
after an engine change - he was settling into the car nicely.
Kieren had some gearbox problems in this race but got the
car home to the finish. Ross took fastest lap once again.
Sunday was a very
early start with conditions that were not fully dry or wet.
Dean Brace lost four litres of oil which did not help but
the rain did sort out the men from the boys! John Marshall
showed some skill leading for a while but Ross Mickel beat
him to the win - good drive from both of them! Colin Atkinson
was third from Nick Brace. David was 13th with Alasdairi 15th
- he was getting pushed from different angles.
The team car was
being driven by former Scottish Champion Carol Brown. Carol
had not been in a Legends for a wee while but came home in
15th place. Steve McCall said he was sure that the other drivers
were tapping her on circuit and that she had done well. Kieren
made a couple of errors but bought his car home to the finish
to score some points for his campaign. Chris Hynds did well
to get fastest lap - it just goes to show how competitive
the Scottish Championship is just now.
Tony Caig had
things all sorted in the second race with a great win from
Scott Hynds with Alasdair Gauld in third. It was very close
as they all crossed the line with John Marshall in 4th. Carol
came in 14th with Kieren 16th. David had an engine mounting
break and he could not select any gears. Elliott Mason is
fast becoming a force to be reckoned with and he came home
with the fastest lap.
The sixth Legends
race of the weekend saw Nick and Dean Brace as non starters
after their damage. David Hunter and Chris Hynds had a great
race with Chris taking the honours to a deserved win. Alasdair
Gauld was third with Carol Brown getting right back into Legends
racing with fourth place - we could not have asked any more
from the former Scottish Champion as she had not even seen
the car prior to the weekend! John Marshall was 6th - really
getting it together and that was all he needed to clinch the
overall result for Sunday - well done John. Kieren took 14th
with a new engine and box.
It was a busy
weekend and such a hard time but the team worked so hard all
weekend. Thanks to all. It's now back to the race garage to
get the cars prepared for round four of the National Championship
which takes place at Cadwell Park
