April - National Championship
Rounds Two and Three
Brands Hatch
Well, after such
a hard three weeks sorting out the bus and getting eight cars
ready for this weekend (four for Knockhill and four for Brands)
- it's been a mental time! I set off for Brands with half
my teak and left Colin with the others back at the garage
and off we went for the 10 hour drive to Brands Hatch. We
got there on Friday morning to set up ready for the weekend
- it was the best motor racing I have seen in a long time
but a bit frantic running with the Trucks.
After the familiarisation
session all the cars seemed to be OK and they went out for
the first race. Darren (Gaulton) lost his axle after a bit
of a coming together with Nick Brace. Most people would call
it a day but Darren showed real grit and soldiered on to come
home 27th - those finishes can make all the difference at
the end of the season. Up at the front John Jon (Higgins)
won from Lawrence Davey (a good second) after some close racing.
He was under pressure from Ross (Marshall), Lee (Fitzpatrick)
and Pete Morton. What a race. Ross is adapting well to the
Nationals and underlined his Scottish Championship status
again by taking the fastest lap.
In the second race
Lee took a well deserved with from Niki Meredith and JJ with
Ross next up again. Stephen Treherne and Lawrence were behind
them. Darren was struggling with his car a little - we only
got him out as the race started and he did not have proper
brakes. JJ got the fastest lap in that one.
The final on Saturday
was another nail-biter with a lot going on. Lawrence took
the win this time with Lee in third. JJ's engine split in
two halves but he got home 16th to pick up some points…
Back to camp for
more work to sort things out - new engine for JJ and set up
for Darren. Lee and Ross were OK but obviously the cars were
spanner checked ready for Sunday
Race one was superb
for the team - Burnet 1-2-3 thanks to JJ, Ross and Lee in
that order! Darren was driving real well too and took 8th.
Ross took another fastest lap and put John Jon under pressure.
Race two saw a
rare win for the old fox, former Champion Peter Morton after
a good fight with Lawrence. The were followed by the Burnett
trio train of Lee, Ross and John Jon! Darren was also in the
top 10 again coming home 9th.
If you watched
the final from the pit wall you would think the drivers were
all nutters… JJ and Ross were starting from the back of the
29 car grid. These two got a 1-2 with Ross glued to JJ's back
bumper. There was loads of damage on the first lap which brought
out the "safety" car. Well done to Dean Brace with 4th place.
Lee got hit by someone having an 'off' so his luck was not
there on this one. Lee had won the day overall on Saturday
and today it was John Jon's turn to claim the honours.
So, wins and fastest
laps plus Darren having some great runs and getting it all
together. Let's see how we do at Cadwell Park. Before that
though there is the business of the GT Round for the Scottish
racers at Knockhill.
