7th June - Scottish
Classic Sports & Saloons
Round Three
Cadwell Park
That's us back
home from our 3 days at Cadwell Park. We were up until the
wee hours on Thursday morning setting up the 'new' Mk1 Escort
of John Marshall. After Big Tom had sorted out the rear of
the car with some spring changes we completed the set up -
we had to be ready at Cadwell on Friday morning for some testing.
John had never been to Cadwell so this was important.
Saturday saw qualifying
and our first race after Tom and Steve McCall had to make
a major repair to a broken fuel pipe. Thanks to Ronnie Thom
at Wheels Around (the Yokohama Dealer that services the championship)
as Steve had to borrow some of his air line to sort out John's
problem.
John qualified
in 2nd which he thought was great as this was only his second
outing in the car and also as Cadwell is such a demanding
circuit. The weather was scorching hot but John was feeling
happy with the car but he is still getting used to the standing
starts. Andrew Smith (Morgan) got off to a flying start as
did Mark Campbell in his mint and very fast Triumph TR5 -
he gave the 3.9 litre Morgan a fantastic run until he had
to retire with a broken rotor arm. John was chasing hard and
getting to grips with the track but unable to catch the big
engined Morgan. He did keep all the others behind though to
finish second overall and 1st in class which is of course
what really matters.
Back to the paddock
to check the car over and ready for the second race. We made
sure that the fuel problem was still Ok and also worked on
the brakes as there was perhaps a bit too much travel.
We chatted about
the day and tried to sort out the standing starts. We woke
to thunder storms and so much rain which meant different tyres
and suspension changes for the second race.
John's start was
excellent getting into first place and pulling out a slight
lead. On lap six Mark Campbell in the Triumph started putting
John under pressure so he decided to let him go. John watched
and learned from the car in front and took second place overall
once again and beat the third place man by over 45 seconds
- a great drive on a circuit which is difficult at the best
of times and perhaps more so in the wet. It was another class
win which is good for the championship standings although
Mark Campbell is not part of the Scottish Championship so
effectively this was an overall win for John Marshall.
All the guys from
the Scottish Classic Sports & Saloon Championship had a great
weekend - enjoying the racing away from home.
